Mani Bhavan Tour - Gandhi Museum Tour

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was one of the most influential figures in India's struggle for independence and the non voilent fight for India's independence against the British. He employed non voilent civil disobedience movements and also inspired many movements for non-violence, civil rights and freedom across the world. He is known as the Mahatma or the great soul an honour that was conferred upon him when he left South Africa in 1914. In India he is popularly known as Bapu. His birthday on 2 October is a National Holiday in India and is also celebrated as World Non Violence Day.

During his stay in India, Gandhi was a frequent visitor to Mumbai and stayed in Mani Bhavan during that time.

Mani Bhavan is located at # 19, Laburnum Road in the Gamdevi precinct of downtown Mumbai, acted as the focal point of Gandhi's political activities in Mumbai between 1917 and 1934.

Mani Bhavan is now converted into a Gandhi Museum that houses many of his personal items and houses the same room that was used by Gandhi during his stay in Mani Bhavan.

Gandhi's simple room remains untouched and there is a wonderful photographic record of his life, along with dioramas and original documents such as letters he wrote to Hitler and US President Roosevelt.

Now there is a small room which traces journey of Mahatma's life in the form of beautiful small exhibits enclosed in glass boxes that are a wonderful spectacle.

Just a few hundred meters from Mani Bhavan is the famous Gowalia Tank, where Gandhi held a meeting in August 1942 to launch the famous 'Quit India Movement'. Gowalia tank is now renamed August Kranti Maidan (August Revolution Square), in memory of that meeting.
