Important Update : In November 2016, the Indian Government demonitized Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes and introduced the new Rs 500 notes and a new Rs 2000 note. The Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes in this article are no longer used in India, as they are the old demonitized currency notes.
India Travel Advice : According to the customs and immigrations, travelers visiting and traveling to India are not allowed to carry any Indian Currency purchased outside India. It is strictly prohibitted to bring in indian currency notes from outside the country. Only Indians who have visited abroad on a holiday or vacation and are returning to India, can bring in maximum Rs 7,500/-
Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50 notes come in handy in Mumbai and other parts of India while using Taxi's, Railyway trains, Tuk Tuk's and shopping on the streets of mumbai.
Rs 100 and Rs 500 currency notes in India are useful to pay in Restaurents, tipping, hotels and night clubs. Rs 1,000 note can be useful if you don't like to carry to many notes.
The Mahatma Gandhi Series is the current note series used by India. It started in 1996. There is a Mahatma Gandhi Portrait as the watermark on these Indian currency notes. On the reverse side of the currency note there are different watermarks.
Each bank note has the amount written in 17 different languages. English and Hindi in the front and Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu on the back side.
The Rs 1, Rs 2 and Rs 5 notes are rarely used now a days. Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50 and Rs 100 are commonly used. Rs 500 and Rs 1000 are used for higher transactions. The ATM vending machines in India offer Rupees 100, Rupees 500 and Rupees 1,000 notes.
The notes issued by the Reserve Bank of India are made out of paper.

Important Notice : Do not accept any INR 500 or INR 1,000 bank notes with the year series equal to "2005" or before that. If you look at the backside of the Rupees 1,000 note above note, at the bottom is the number "2014". That number denotes the year in which the note was printed.
